Joint Pain Q & A

What Are Common Causes of Joint Pain?

Joint pain occurs in the body for a number of different reasons. Pain is often the result of overuse, strain, and movements like heavy lifting or athletic activity that include repetitive motions. Arthritis is one of the most common causes of joint pain. Arthritis occurs when the cartilage and cushioning in the joint begins to degrade as a result of wear and tear or from injury. The lack of cushioning causes an excessive amount of friction leading to inflammation and chronic pain. This is a common cause of knee pain. Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition that causes antibodies to attack the healthy lining of joints, can be the cause of joint pain.

How Is Joint Pain Treated?

Manual therapies and training from a skilled healthcare provider, such as a chiropractor or physical therapist, can provide relief to joint pain. The process of joint and tissue manipulation is where the practitioner uses his or her hands to apply pressure and manipulation. It's been used to relieve pressure on joints, reduce inflammation, and improve nerve function. In addition to the manipulation or adjustments, practitioners can use ice and heat therapy, electric stimulation, and ultrasound for deep tissue healing. At Arizona Pain Relief, patients may also benefit from trigger point treatments, joint injections, stem cell therapy, and hyaluronic acid injections. Traditional pain relief medication is avoided as it doesn’t treat the underlying cause of the pain.

Joint Injections - At Arizona Pain Relief we don't believe in covering up the symptoms.  We do not use medications such as cortisone, to cover up the pain. Instead, we take a different approach to joint injections. When a joint is injured the joint can produce small amounts of scar tissue in the joint capsule, the scar tissue if not properly rehabilitated limits range of motion. Range of motion is incredibly important for the health of the joint because joints are Avascular (they have no direct blood supply). The only way joints get the proper nutrients to stay healthy is with movement. When the joint capsule moves it pushes out the metabolic waste (like inflammation) from the joint and brings in nutrients. If a joint does not move fully it begins to degenerate and arthritis can set in. When we do joint injections as Arizona Pain Relief our goal is to break up the scar tissue in the joint capsule and get range of motion back into the joint. Treatment goes beyond the symptoms and helps the joint to get healthy again. As a result, your pain goes away and you can go back to living your life the way you want without the limitations of pain and arthritis.
